To increase the flexibility of the generated texts, methods from linguistically motivated generation should be combined with the template-based approach.
There are different representation formalisms for describing the text structure, like static schema or the functional oriented rhetorical structure theory . Some text planning techniques (see for example ) create an explicit representation of the text structure which cover the rhetorical, intensional and in a few cases also the attentional structure of the text to be generated. The text structure can be utilized to determine how different templates can be combined in order to generate a more flexible text. Furthermore, the text structure could be used for the lexical realization of template variables, (see , , and ) and the aggregation of parallel structures. We are currently working on the implementation of such methods in our system.
