How can we design for children to have space to be creative as well as to learn about important phenomena? What can and do children learn as they explore in these kinds of computational worlds either individually or collaboratively? And how should we set about learning and comparing the best systems that exist so far?
The workshop intends to share different approaches to this question, inviting people from Europe, East Europe and United States. We will discuss some of the work of the i3-ese Playground project, alongside presentations of other research involving constructionist environments for learning which focus on play-like environments in which children build things for themselves. We intend to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this approach, the design issues that have to be faced in terms of the visibility and permeability of the systems, and offer some insights into what children might be learning and how.
