Description:

According to the new study regulations for the bachelor's and master's programs (from 2004) in computer science and the bachelor's program in media computer science (from 2010), a seminar on the thesis has to be completed before starting the thesis. Focus will be a presentation in which the current state of the art, as well as the problems and the relevant literature on the particular task are presented. Additionally, potential solutions should be presented. Generally, a high value is placed on the discussion with the audience on the proposed solutions. To prepare for the written report of the bachelor's or master's thesis, the findings of the presentation have to be summarized in an outline.

Registering for the bachelor or master seminar is possible at any time. The only requirement is that the thesis is either completed at the DFKI (research departments 'Intelligent User Interfaces' or 'Innovative Retail Laboratory'), the chair of Prof. Wahlster, or the chair of Prof. Krüger. If you want to register, please write an e-mail including your full name, matriculation number, and the name of your advisor to bms-iui-organizers[at]dfki[dot]de. Please also indicate whether you are writing a bachelor's or a master's thesis. A registration is always acknowledged with an official welcome e-mail containing the detailed criteria for successfully passing the seminar.

After registration, you have to attend the seminar regulary for 6 months. Attendance is compulsory at all sessions. Your own presentation should be given after ca. 3 months of participation whereas presentations will take place only during the lecture period.

The grading of the presentation will be based on the following criteria:
  • Content completeness
  • Presentation style
  • Discussion after the presentation
  • Cooperation during the other seminar presentations
  • Quality of the written outline

It is strongly recommended that the slides are discussed with the supervisor and a sample presentation is given!
