Generative AI

Competence Center at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI)

Generative AI opens up new possibilities for a wide range of applications. The Competence Center Generative AI at DFKI bundles DFKI's research and development expertise in this field. It connects experts from different disciplines to promote interdisciplinary approaches in Generative AI. By bundling expert knowledge from different areas of AI, a synergetic environment is created that enables innovative solutions to complex challenges.

The competence center deals with topics ranging from the development of generative AI solutions, technology transfer and innovation consulting to market studies and feasibility analyses.

Amongst others, we deal with the following topics:

  • Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Language Technology (LT): Generative AI for text generation, translation, speech synthesis and numerous other NLP and LT applications
  • Process Engineering: Generative AI for optimizing processes, development of new products, and product quality improvement
  • Image capturing: Generative AI for creating synthetic images, improving image quality, and developing new image processing techniques
  • Robotics: Generative AI for the development of new robot systems, improvement of robot control and development of new robotics applications
  • Human-machine interaction (HMI): Generative AI for the development of new HMI systems and new HMI applications as well as improvement of user experience
  • Explainability and trustworthiness: we are investigating in various projects how LLMs can be made more transparent in order to increase their trustworthiness for both end users and researchers.
  • Data protection and optimization: Use of local, data protection-compliant models as an alternative to large online models and their optimization using generative agent systems for more complex tasks.

As a bridge between research and industry, the Generative AI Competence Center acts as a central point of contact for industry and research partners and coordinates DFKI's activities in this field. Furthermore, it is DFKI’s central contact point for experts interested in collaboration.

The Competence Center for Generative AI is committed to the ethically responsible development and application of generative AI technologies so that these innovations can be used for societal benefit. By working with partners from business, science, and society, the Competence Center strives to push the boundaries of what is possible through AI while making a positive contribution to current and future challenges.
