I don't understand how exactely syllables should be separated.

Let's take the word "Hexen" (pronounced "häksen"):

"Häk-sen" or "hä-ksen"?

I always try to imagine where I make a tiny pause while speaking. 
In this case, I think I would say it's "hä-ksen".

Can anybody confirm that imagening where the speaker makes a tiny pause is a good way to syllabify words?
