You *will* break code as strings were previously interpreted as regular
expressions are now interpreted as strings now. So ... I would suggest
to try and do the right thing ...

If it decidedly breaks too many things, we can always re-add the test

By the way, the 'does port name contain a dot' test will raise if the
port name is given as a regular expression.
