Abstract
In this paper we present a discussion on the current state of checking technology (both Controlled Language and Grammar Checking), and we stress the need for a generalized theory of textual errors which leads to a hierarchical organization of errors and illegal structures in relation to linguistic text processing. We then discuss the issue of an integrated checking approach.
