Touching the third Dimension (T3D)

The CHI Special Interest Group on Touching the 3rd Dimension (T3D) is the first association of researchers and industrials who explore the space where the flat digital world of surface computing meets the physical, spatially complex, 3D space in which we live.

This interdisciplinary group is composed of computer scientists, software engineers, psychologists, interaction designers, graphic designers, etc., who share their visions of the future interface of 3D touch environments in which stereoscopic visualization is combined with the strengths of advanced multi-touch computing.

  1. Are you interested in T3D and facinated by the possibilites of 3D stereo and touch interaction?

  2. Would like to participate in the SIG T3D?

  3. Are you working in a project related to T3D?

  4. Would you like to cooperate with (or just talk to) others who share your interest in T3D?

If your answer to one of the these question is "yes", get involved!

Thank you all for your participation at the T3D meeting! It was a great success! We had about 50 participants, so that most of the time the SVs had to lock the doors, because there was no more space in the room.

successful T3D SIG Kick-off

In recent years 3D has gained increasing amount of attention - interactive visualization of 3D data has become increasingly important and widespread due to the requirements of several application areas, and entertainment industry has brought 3D experience to the reach of wide audiences through games, 3D movies and stereoscopic displays. However, current user interfaces (UIs) often lack adequate support for 3D interactions: 2D metaphors still dominate in GUI design, 2D desktop systems are often limited in cases where natural interaction with 3D content is required, and sophisticated 3D user interfaces consisting of stereoscopic projections and tracked input devices are rarely adopted by ordinary users. In the future, novel interaction design solutions are needed to better support the natural interaction and utilize the special features of 3D technologies.

In this workshop we address the research and industrial challenges involved in exploring the space where the flat digital world of surface computing meets the physical, spatially complex, 3D space in which we live. The workshop will provide a common forum for researchers to share their visions of the future and recent results in the area of improving 3D interaction and UI design.

3dchi Workshop @ CHI 2012

The Tutorial on “Interactive Surfaces for Interaction with Stereoscopic 3D (ISIS3D)” aims to provide an interactive tutorial followed by a workshop that focuses on the challenges that appear when the flat digital world of surface computing meets the curved, physical, 3D space we live in.

Several research groups in the ITS community started to ex- plore the challenges, but also limitations of tabletop 3D in- teraction, and topics such as 3D UI design methods, 3D in- teraction techniques, and their development in the context of hardware development and quantifying perceptual limita- tions. The goal of the tutorial and workshop is to foster dis- cussions among participants and to provide an intensive exchange between industrial and academic researchers working in the area of 3D tabletops, especially 3D UI design or touch-based interaction with stereoscopic 3D displays.

successful 3DCHI Workshop @ CHI 2012

The Tutorial and Workshop on “Interactive Surfaces for Interaction with Stereoscopic 3D (ISIS3D)” aims to provide an interactive tutorial followed by a workshop that focuses on the challenges that appear when the flat digital world of surface computing meets the curved, physical, 3D space we live in.

Starting with a tutorial, we introduce stereoscopic tabletops from hardware conception about input and output technologies, perceptual issues, HCI aspects and different applications. The tutorial will be followed by a workshop to foster discussions among participants and to provide an intensive exchange between industrial and academic researchers working in the area of touch-based interaction in 3D display environments. A strong focus of the tutorial as well as the workshop will be on the challenges of 3D interaction on 2D surfaces. The tutorial and workshop will last for a full-day during ACM ITS 2013.

The workshop solicits position papers. Position papers (2-4 pages) should contain research or design work within the scope of touch interaction and 3D or stereoscopic display and may include preliminary results or conceptual ideas. The papers should be prepared in the SIGCHI extended abstract format. You can download Word and LaTeX templates from the sigchi website: http://www.sigchi.org/publications/chipubform
