The continuous proliferation of Web services encapsulating business software and hardware assets, e-commerce, or social software applications in the Web 2.0 holds promise to revolutionize the way of interaction within today's society and economy. However, from the perspective of strong AI automated and meaningful coordination of Web services appears hard to achieve without well-founded logic based specification of service semantics. Conventional XML-based Web services are lacking such formal semantics.
Key idea of the semantic Web is to annotate Web resources and services with concept terms and rules taken from agreed-upon, or aligned ontologies which semantics are formally specified in an appropriate logic theory. That enables intelligent agents to better understand the meaning of such services in due course of their proactive service discovery, composition, and execution. In environments with contested services, the agents may even need to enter service negotiations in order to resolve conflicting goals, and to maximize their individual payoffs or social welfare. Other issues of agent-based semantic service coordination include privacy, and trust, as well as dynamics, and scalability.
It is often proclaimed that the synthesis between semantic Web, services, and agents eventually leads to a significant improvement of the way and quality of Web service provision to the human user. The convergence of semantic Web technologies, social Web 2.0, and Web services into a so called service Web 3.0 is considered the next step in the evolution of the Web.
Talks of this seminar will present selected means, systems, and applications of agent-based service coordination in the semantic Web.
