In December 2007 Marcus Liwicki received the Alumni Award for the best thesis of the Institute for Computer Science and Applied Mathematics in 2007. The paper "Combining On-Line and Off-Line Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory Networks for Handwritten Text Line Recognition" presented at the ICFHR 2008 was among the best papers and was therefore selected for publication in a special issue of the Pattern Recognition Journal. Marcus Liwicki was selected by the chairs of the ICFHR 2008 to write the conference report for the IAPR newsletter. The paper "Data-Embedding Pen — Augmenting Ink Strokes with Meta-Information" was nominated for the Nakano Award at DAS 2010. After a tied situation in the first voting round, it finally got the second position. Since 2010 Marcus Liwicki organizes the DAS discussion groups.
