The aim of this project is to develop an intelligent question answering system for health information systems. To this end, we will further develop the DFKI LT information extraction technology for complex semantic relations. The information extraction system should be able to recognize relevant concepts and relations in the health domain. The discovered knowledge will be utilized for supporting the question answering system. Users of the MEDIXIN system will be able to submit complex questions in natural language, e.g., by combining case descriptions with questions. The system will adapt to the language of its users and will thereby attempt to overcome the communication barrier between patients and experts.
