Exact Synthesis of Biomolecular Protocols for Multiple Sample Pathways on Digital Microfluidic Biochips

Digital-microfluidic biochips(DMFBs) allow labo-ratory steps associated with genomic bioassays to be carriedout in an automated and highly efficient fashion. However,to support complex (multi-sample) biomolecular protocols forquantitative analysis, conventional design-automation methodsare ineffective, thereby motivating the need for more suitablesolutions. While first methods to address this problem haverecently been introduced, they neglect architectural details andtechnology-related constraints, and use heuristics to oversimplifythe search for a design solution. These simplifications result indesigns that may either not be realizable on a DMFB or it is notpossible to evaluate how far they are from being optimal. In thiswork, we propose an exact synthesis method that does not rely onsimplistic models and heuristics, but solves the underlying designproblem in an exact fashion. The proposed method allows for thedetermination of exact and realistic results for the realization ofquantitative-analysis biomolecular protocols on DMFBs.
