This chapter describes how lessons from the field of industrial quality management, as developed in the manufacturing field, are starting to transform assessment of translation. Instead of a laborious and inconsistent task that relies on matters of taste and unstated assumptions, it is moving to one that addresses the needs of content creators and their audiences. This shift requires a change from the intuitive understanding of quality that dominates most discussions within the translation industry.
