Laboratory for Certification and Digital Sovereignty

The German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (Deutsches Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz – DFKI) is committed to the promotion of credible and trustworthy Artificial Intelligence.

The overall strategies of DFKI for its research programme and activities adhere to ethical principles and values based on fundamental human rights. As an important part of these strategies, DFKI encourages the objective assessment of AI systems aiming at the attestation of compliance with ethical principles and values. The AI assessment programme of DFKI will be concentrated in its new Laboratory for Certification and Digital Sovereignty.

For almost 20 years DFKI has continously been operating an evaluation facility for the assessment of security of IT products in critical infrastructures. Based on this outstanding experience the Laboratory for Certification and Digital Sovereignty will actively promote the development, standardisation and application of certification criteria for AI systems. Such criteria are envisaged to address the protection of security, privacy and autonomy of all persons affected by the use of AI systems. Particular attention will be payed to the controllability, explicability, steadiness, safety and fairness of AI systems.

The DFKI Laboratory for Certification and Digital Sovereignty strives for establishing a center of excellence for the certification of AI systems aligned with technical and societal standards of different contexts and frameworks. The assessment of security, privacy and autonomy paves the way for credible and trustworthy AI systems and promotes the digital sovereignty of all persons affected by the use AI systems.
