Consorzio 5T (5T), the 5T Consortium (Telematics
Technologies for Transport and Traffic in
Turin) was founded in 1992 as a corporate company.
Members of 5T are the city's transport and electricity
companies (Azienda Tranvie Municipale and Azienda Energetica
Municipale) and the following private companies: Fiat Auto, Gilardini,
Italtel Telesis, Mizar Automazione, Olivetti
Tecnost, and Solari Udine.
The involvement of public and private sector organisations in the
construction and maintenance of the system is not only a guarantee of
commitment to the project goals, it has also provided an excellent
framework for collaboration that is fundamental to the project's
success.
The 5T project was approved by the City Council in mid-1992
as an immediate, far-reaching action that would enhance the efficiency
of road transportation and reduce the negative consequences of demand
saturation in the short term.
By the end of 1996 it is expected that the 5T system will
reduce average trip times in the whole conurbation by 25%, while at
the same time lowering vehicle emissions by 18%.
These ambitious targets form part of the system specifications that
contractors must achieve to fulfil their obligations.
5T partners who will be mainly involved in the
FLUIDS
project will be ATM (Azienda Tranvie
Municipale) and Mizar with minor
participation of Fiat (CSST).
Olivetti Tecnost and Italtel Telesis are also envisaged.
