 According to Sun 's marketing, Java(TM)² constitutes a simple, robust, object-oriented, platform-independent multi-threaded, dynamic general-purpose programming environment. It's best for creating applets and applications for the Internet, intranets and any other complex, distributed network.

• The book ``The Java Programming Language'', Arnold and Gosling [1998], offers an excellent introduction to the core programming language and the ``Java Language Specification 1.0'' , Gosling et al. [1996a], provides a detailed reference. Version 1.0 of the Language Specification is also available from DFKI (restricted access);

• The online version of the ``The Java Tutorial'' by Campione and Walrath [1996] is being updated continuously;

• Java Development Kit 1.1 Documentation - also available at DFKI (restricted access);

• The already available Java Development Kit 1.2 Documentation relates to the beta release of the forthcoming new JDK version;
