[mary-users] Recommended Linux

Does anybody have a recommendation for a Linux image in a Virtual Machine?

I tried the latest Ubuntu Desktop, but it wouldn't work, SVN wouldn't install, and I saw that it's a requirement to test the source code.

Or is there any way around it?
