We are using th atmark-Distribution and nothing (yet) from ROS, but
perhaps ROS is also trying reverse hostname lookups:

We (@iStruct) had the problem that the ftp-Server waited for about half
a minute until accepting a connection. That could be solved by removing
the dns (and mdns) resolver libs from the hosts-line in
/etc/nsswitch.conf, leaving only 'files' (which means /etc/hosts). Our
WLAN-router advertises it's dns-server via dhcp but is then unable to
answer (inverse) lookup requests, after some time they timed out.
Without using the (broken) dns the ftp-Server is able to accept client
connections without a delay.
