From 15 to 17 March 2026, the “German Conference on Medical Image Computing (BVM)” will take place in Lübeck. Leading scientists and experts from industry are invited to exchange ideas on the latest developments in computer-assisted analysis of medical image data. This renowned conference is being organised by the Institute for Medical Informatics at the University of Lübeck in collaboration with the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) Lübeck. The conference will be chaired by Prof. Dr. Heinz Handels, director of the Research Department “AI in Medical Image and Signal Processing (AImedI)”.

The aim of the conference is to present current research findings and to deepen discussions between representatives from the fields of medicine, computer science and engineering, industry and clinical application. The conference is also expressly aimed at young scientists who would like to report on their bachelor's or master's projects. Medical image processing is a key technology for modern, image-based diagnostics and surgical support. For over thirty years, the BVM has provided a special platform for scientific exchange in this field.

Artificial intelligence and machine learning are particularly important topics. However, the conference covers all areas of medical image processing, in particular algorithms, hardware and software systems, and their clinical application. A varied programme of specialist lectures, poster presentations and high-profile keynotes is on offer.

Prof. Dr. Antonio Krüger (CEO) from DFKI will give a keynote speech on the topic of ‘Focus on European Innovation and Regulation’. He will outline the opportunities offered by artificial intelligence, with a focus on Germany and Europe. He highlights research approaches and current trends in the AI landscape. He also addresses key political initiatives such as the national Hightech Agenda and proposals for expanding AI data centers to advance research and practical application. Finally, he analyses the regulatory framework of the EU AI Act and its impact on innovation, security, and social trust.

Further high-profile keynote speeches will also be given by Prof. Dr. Aasa Feragen, DTU Compute at the Technical University of Denmark, Dr. Nils Forkert, Departments of Radiology, Clinical Neurosciences, and Electrical and Software Engineering at the University of Calgary, and Prof. Dr. Xi-Nian Zuo, McGovern Institute for Brain Research at Beijing Normal University.
