The EU's BigMedilytics project aims to significantly increase healthcare productivity through the adoption of big-data technologies while reducing costs, improving patients' chances of recovery and increasing access to healthcare facilities. The project is divided into 12 pilot studies.

The Charité leads the kidney disease pilot and is supported by the DFKI, the Hasso-Plattner Institute, the AOK Northeast and the University Clinic Essen. The applied methods include machine learning for the early detection, management and prevention of complications in kidney transplants. The preparatory work from the MACSS project is used as a blueprint for the BigMedilytics project.
