Increasing Industrial Communication Security by Physical Layer Security

The project "Increasing Industrial Communication Security by Physical Layer Security" (IICoSeP) aims to improve the security, integrity and confidentiality of industrial communication infrastructures through physical layer security (PLS) methods. To this end, methods of wired and wireless PLS are being researched. Industry 4.0 applications that rely on wired communication will be secured by an individual physically defined digital fingerprint (Physically Unclonable Function). In the wireless domain, PLS methods are used to secure 5G campus networks, among other applications. In both areas of application, machine learning methods are to be used to increase the performance of the applications. The innovations of the project lie, on the one hand, in the change from the usual information-theory-driven PLS to a signal-processing approach and, on the other hand, in the simultaneous application of PLS in wireless communication, wireline communication and secure authentication. Thus, it is possible to respond to the growing interconnectivity and the complex requirements that accompany it: Cost, energy consumption and latency are reduced while reliability, computational power and, most importantly, confidentiality as well as integrity of the involved devices are improved. By developing new security technologies for information transmission, the project results make an important contribution to Germany's technological sovereignty.
