The Mobile Payload Element (MPE) is an announcement from the DLR Space Administration. In the context of a Phase 0/A study, the project develops and evaluates concepts for a national contribution to a European lunar lander mission. One of the goals of the MPE mission is to collect soil samples from a distance of at least 100 m from the lander, and return them to the lander. The DFKI RIC is acting as a sub-contractor concerned with the aspects of autonomy, mobility and software of the system.
The prime contractor of the project is Kayser-Threde (KT). Other sub-contractors are von Hörner und Sulger (vH&S), the DLR Institute for Robotics and Mechatronics (DLR-RM) as well as EADS Astrium Bremen (Astrium).
