Smart resilience services in the manufacturing industry

In a globalized and connected industry, disruptions in production or interruptions in supply chains represent business risks and can lead to massive financial losses.
Amplified by a significant increase in production complexity due to Industry 4.0, resilience management is becoming an indispensable success factor for industrial production. The ability of a company to anticipate and proactively adapt to internal disruptions (e.g., tool wear or material quality variations) and external changes (e.g. supply shortages) is the “quest for resilience”.

The goal of the SPAICER project is the development of AI-based Smart Resilience Services to generate comprehensible recommendations for actions that enable operators and decision makers to initiate meaningful stabilization measures at an early stage.

To increase resilience, services are offered on an open digital platform for companies – without having them to become AI experts themselves or hand over their data sovereignty.
Under the direction of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wolfgang Maaß, the research area Smart Service Engineering coordinates the cooperation of 12 consortium partners in the SPAICER project. The partners include the Machine Tool Laboratory (WZL) at RWTH Aachen University, the University of Freiburg, the Technical University of Darmstadt, the Institute for Technology and Innovation Management at RWTH Aachen University, the Otto Beisheim School of Management (WHU), Deutsche Bahn, deZem, Feintool, Mendritzki, SAP, SCHOTT, SEITEC and SENSEERING.

In addition, more than 40 associated partners from leading industrial and -research sectors are involved in the project and support the consortium with their -expertise. With a total volume of just under €10 million, the SPAICER project is being funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action from 01.04.2020 - 31.03.2023 as part of the Innovation Competition for Artificial Intelligence.
