100 million translated words: A new milestone for the German EU Council Presidency Translator

| Press release | Language & Text Understanding | Multilinguality and Language Technology | Saarbrücken

Since the beginning of the German Presidency of the Council of the European Union in July 2020, the German EU Council Presidency Translator has been supporting European citizens in their daily communication across national and linguistic borders. The project is led by the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) and integrates systems from DeepL, DFKI, eTranslation, and Tilde into a platform created by Tilde. The translation tool has now set a new record: with more than 100 million words translated over the past 150 days, the Presidency Translator has clearly demonstrated the importance of cross-border communication and seamless information flow for a Europe "united in diversity". This record number corresponds to the sum of all of the words in the Encyclopedia Britannica (44 million), the entire Brockhaus (33 million) and all of the basic forms listed in the Duden corpus (23 million).

With the help of the EU Council Presidency Translator, not only the German website of the Council Presidency can be translated into all EU languages with one click. The MT system can also translate texts that are entered directly on the Presidency website, complete documents and entire websites into all 24 official EU languages. The special feature of this system is that it is a purely European solution: All servers are located in the EU, transmissions are securely encrypted and all data is deleted immediately once the translation has been generated. The Translator is based on high-tech AI and supported by a combination of industry, research and public authorities in Europe. It shows that European language technology can lead the international competition in this field. A special contribution is made by Germany’s Federal Foreign Office, which supports the development of the translator through grants, and by translators from the German ministries, who have provided training data and evaluate the MT output so that the Presidency Translator can be continuously improved. Press coverage at national and international level has been consistently positive. An overview of all publications to date can be found in the Presidency Translator Media Review.

Further information on the German EU Council Presidency Translator is available on the Website of the MT Tool and in the recently published interview on the occasion of this major milestone with project leader Prof. Josef van Genabith (DFKI). Thanks to the German EU Council Presidency Translator, the interview is also available in English, Spanish, French and Italian.
