SC_APX-HMI

An Adaptive and Personalized in-Vehicle Machine-User-Inerface for an Improved User Experience

  • Duration:

An HMI (Human-Machine Interface) is the part of a system that enables the communication between a machine and a human. It is in charge of presenting possibilities of interaction (input) as well as all the information necessary for a user to carry out a certain task with the machine. In the context of vehicles, this can refer to the primary task of driving, but also to secondary tasks such as using the infotainment system. Infotainment systems provide the driver with information and entertainment through audio, video, and other modalities, but also provide interaction possibilities through touch, gestures, speech, etc.

HMIs play an important role in the user experience and behavior of the driver. They are responsible for providing the driver and the passengers with information about the vehicle and the environment. Driving is one of the most complex tasks humans undertake. The behavior of the drivers can be influenced by both external factors (weather, traffic, streets, etc. ) and internal factors (age, amount of experience, psychological state, etc.). Since every person and situation is different, a single design of an HMI that fits every person and every situation is not possible. An HMI should therefore continuously adapt itself to the driver and the situation.

The goal of this project is to develop an adaptive and personalized HMI-prototype for vehicles that improves the user's experience. Since the experience and the behavior of the driver can be influenced by internal and external factors, the HMI should adapt itself taking these into consideration. A core focus of the project will be the driver's mental workload.
