Abstract

This paper addresses the problem of recognizing objects in visual media. Though the field has come a long way, this task is far from being solved for generic objects in arbitrary scenes. Nevertheless, recent developments have made object recognition more successful and exible, with its most promising applications in multimedia indexing and retrieval. The main purpose of this paper is to give a survey of object recognition in both still images and video. Also, a self-built prototype is described for the recognition of items presented to a camera. In experiments, a global, histogram-based method and a local, patch-based approach were compared, with the latter showing a higher robustness to scene changes.
