Semantic Digital Factory – Using Engineering Knowledge to Create Ontologies for Virtual Training

The paper presents the design approach taken in the EU-FP7 project VISTRA, which is aiming at the development of a virtual training system for assembly line workers in automotive industry. The overall system contains several heterogeneous components, among which ontologies play a central role: They uniquely define data structures of assembly processes, plant organization, training scenarios, and training results. This makes the system’s data flows unambiguous, understandable, and very flexible at the same time. VISTRA also shows how the organization, storage, and access to these ontologies can be realized efficiently in an industrial environment using triple stores and web services.
